SAMe is sold in the United States as a dietary supplement. S-Adenosyl-L-methionine was discovered in the early 1950s. It's made in the body from methionine, an amino acid found in foods. It has been found to regulate key functions in living cells.

Function and Application of S-Adenosyl-L-methionine CAS 29908-03-0
1.  Adenosylmethionine is a physiologically active molecule present in all human tissues and body fluids. It is involved in important biochemical reactions in the body as a methyl donor (transmethylation) and as a precursor to physiological sulfhydryl compounds (e.g. cysteine, taurine, glutathione and coenzyme A) (transsulfuration). In the liver, the fluidity of hepatocyte membranes is regulated by methylation of plasma membrane phospholipids, and the synthesis of sulphide products during detoxification can be facilitated by the transsulphurylation reaction. As long as the bioavailability of adenosylmethionine in the liver is within normal limits, these reactions help to prevent intrahepatic cholestasis.
2. S-Adenosyl-L-methionine used clinically to improve liver function. Used in combination with L-dopa in the treatment of Parkinson's disease to improve the efficacy of L-dopa and reduce side effects. Local pain at the injection site, temporary anxiety and insomnia may be seen.
